Larviciding

The act of Larviciding targets mosquito larvae in the breeding habitat before they can mature into adult mosquitoes and disperse.

Larvicide treatments of breeding habitats help reduce the adult mosquito population in nearby areas.

There are two common types of larvicides that can be applied safely to water to control the local mosquito population without causing any harm to other aquatic life.

Bti

Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) is a naturally occurring soil bacterium that can effectively kill mosquito larvae present in water. Bti is the primary material used for mosquito control because of its low toxicity to non-target species.

Mosquito larvae that are exposed to this type of larvicide have trouble digesting food they eat after the exposure in the water. They then die of starvation.

Generally Bti is the most cost effective product to use however has short residual properties.

Insect Growth Regulators

IGR’s control insects by interrupting normal development. (S)-methoprene is a type of  IGR – it interferes with normal metamorphosis, preventing the immature insect from emerging as an adult

IGR Larvicide products are applied directly to water or to dry land that will be inundated by water using backpack sprayers and truck or aircraft-mounted sprayers.

Tablet, pellet, granular, and briquet formulations of larvicides are also applied by hand, machine or aerial application to breeding areas.

IGR’s typically have a higher cost, however can be cost effective over a longer period of time due to extended residual properties.
